For many families, BBQ grills are synonymous with making memories. Whether you are cooking out by the pool or tailgating before the big game, a BBQ grill is a great way to relax while feeding a crowd. When your grill starts to rust, though, the party can come screeching to a halt. To stop rust in its tracks, follow our rust prevention tips below and visit our selection of rust protectant and removers.
What is Rusting?
Rusting is a form of corrosion that occurs when iron meets water. As water is exposed to air, it combines with carbon dioxide to form a weak carbonic acid. When it hits iron, the iron starts to dissolve and some of the water breaks down into its components: hydrogen and oxygen. Newly freed oxygen from the water, as well as oxygen from the air, combines with the dissolved iron to create iron oxide—rust. Humidity, saltwater, temperature, and other environmental factors can catalyze the process, speeding up the rate of rusting.
Is Stainless Steel Rust Proof?
Despite common beliefs, stainless steel is “rust resistant” rather than “rust proof.” Stainless steel contains chromium, which acts as a natural rust protector. When exposed to oxygen, chromium forms a thin layer of chromium oxide that blocks oxygen from reaching the iron. However, there must be a concentration of at least 12% chromium for this protective layer to form. Depending on quality, stainless steel may contain between 12% and 30% chromium. If the localized concentration drops below 12%, rust can form. Therefore, low-quality grills are at higher risk than better grills.
On a grill, the most common culprit for rust is using steel tools on the stainless surface. Over time, tiny steel particles can coat the stainless, overwhelming the chromium and allowing rust to occur.
Safe Grill Cleaning Tips
To protect your stainless steel grill, never use steel wool or harsh cleaners on it. Instead, choose a soft sponge and a paste made of baking soda and water. If your grill is heavily soiled, you can add a bit of white vinegar to create a natural foaming cleanser.
